Interview: Georg Pöschl - Product Development
The perfect environment for new solutions and products
At TechCenter ZETA, in close cooperation with customers from the pharmaceutical industry, innovative solutions for specific challenges are being developed. Process development often goes hand in hand with the development of products that offer added value for (bio)pharmaceutical production. Georg Pöschl, product developer at ZETA, tells us what is important in this context.
Target-oriented cooperation with the customer
The TechCenter is a veritable source of idea generation, from which new products are continuously emerging. Can you tell us how many there have been so far and how much time usually passes from the initial idea to industrial production?
In recent years, we have been able to develop more than 15 solutions and products originating from a large number of ideas and based on specific customer requirements. Since the spectrum ranges from small safety-related devices to process-engineering product optimizations to complete biopharmaceutical systems, the development time can vary from about 2 weeks to 2 years.

Sterility is the basic requirement for the transfer of liquid biopharmaceuticals. How does ZETA manage to ensure it?
All the knowledge that our ZETA colleagues have been able to generate in many different projects is flowing into product development. Here, we channel the wide-ranging expert knowledge to meet not only sterility but also all the other requirements posed by the GMP world.
Talking about product development. What do you consider to be particularly important in the development of new products within the biopharmaceutical sector, and what are the challenges?
A core element of product development is the intensive integration of customers. The closer we work with the customer in the development phase, the more target-oriented we can solve their specific problem. The challenge is to keep the balance between technical feasibility and economic and ecological aspects.

ZETA cooperates in R&D with research institutions and national/international experts. Which research project do you particularly remember and why?
A development project with our corporate partner Boehringer Ingelheim in Biberach. Despite a difficult set of tasks, this project has been a success story over the years and resulted not only in a fantastic product, but also in an intensive partnership for future development activities.
Is there a "special moment" for you in relation to the TechCenter in Lebring?
Every development project has a "special moment": the one when you realize that, despite numerous setbacks, through passion, persistence and creativity you have been able to implement an idea in such a way that the customer is completely satisfied.
