ZETA completed a major project at Boehringer Ingelheim RCV in Vienna, Austria, within 24 months. The project involved planning and constructing process plants, a new building, and converting an existing building. Leveraging their expertise in planning and project management, ZETA managed the development-based EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management) project as a one-stop-shop.

The challenge

Time to market is crucial in biopharmaceutical production, as faster availability of medicines ensures quicker patient care. To meet stringent time-to-market goals, the customer sets an ambitious timeline, halving the usual allocation. Finding the right execution strategy was essential to adhere to this schedule. High-level project coordination was required to manage the complexity of involving multiple partners from different disciplines and numerous interfaces.

ZETA addressed complex technical, contractual, and organizational aspects to develop the best overall concept for the customer’s needs. The execution strategy involved intensified planning and full integration of all disciplines, focusing on a smooth production process. ZETA was responsible for general planning, construction supervision, and project management for all phases, from planning to commissioning, and handled the production process planning, execution, and automation, while consulting reliable partners for construction, building services, and electrical engineering.

Experience and proven methods

The cooperation of numerous project partners and overlapping areas required extensive planning under extreme time pressure. ZETA leveraged its experience, proven methods, and innovative digitization measures to manage the project’s complexity. FrameWORKS, a centralized digital platform, was utilized to support collaboration among project partners and efficiently manage various disciplines across all phases.

Ambitious timeline

The carefully prepared and precise execution concept marked the beginning of the project. ZETA was responsible for the overall time scheduling and strongly emphasized the involvement of all project delivery partners during the planning stages.

Layout planning and cleanroom design

Clean room zones were defined on four floors, and a clean room layout, including classes CNAC, CNC, C, and D, was elaborated. Space limitations for the placement of equipment were taken into account.

Stringent customer requirements

The experienced EPCM team flexibly met strict customer requirements and tight timelines. ZETA ensured seamless collaboration through a unified digital environment and efficient change management.
