„Heat Converter“ Revolutionizes District Heating in Linz
Innovative technology for maximum efficiency and flexibility
The heat pump raises the temperature of waste heat from flue gas cleaning and biomass combustion to a usable level. Thanks to high COP values, thermal output is increased while electricity consumption is minimized.
The scalable system responds flexibly to volatile market conditions and is open to future heat sources such as industrial waste heat or district cooling. Power-to-Heat technology and cold storage are also part of the concept.
Simulations and synergies as success factors
A solid feasibility study with hourly annual simulations formed the basis for planning. The heat pumps can generate both heating and cooling—an advantage that reduces investment costs and increases energy efficiency through shared technology use.
Commissioning is planned for 2028 and is expected to increase the share of renewable energy in Linz’s district heating by up to 15%.
